Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh – Vietnam wasn’t always known by its present name. In fact, it wasn’t known by its modern name prior to the 19th century. Those who care to check the historical archives of Vietnam will find that the place was once known by many different names.
Some of the names attributed to this beautiful bay include Luc Thuy, Van Don, or even An Bang. Its modern name first appeared in a marine map which was printed on a French newspaper. The name Ha Long can literally be translated into Bay of Descending Dragons. The story has it that a sighting of a strange serpentine creature was reported in 1898. This was reported, as the story goes, to be an Asian dragon.
