Windsor Castle in Berkshire is one of the most famous castles in the United Kingdom. Aside from the fortress however, there are many other attractions in the area.

Location

The castle can be found in the town of Windsor in Berkshire. This is at the southeast portion of England. There are a couple of railway stations at Windsor and its twin town Eton. These are very close to the castle.

If emanating from London, you can leave from Paddington or Waterloo. If coming from Waterloo, board the train going Windsor and Eton Riverside. If you are going to drive, the M4 motorway is the route to take.

What to See

There are many areas in and around the castle you can check out. St Georges Chapel and the State Apartments can be visited. There are also different types of paintings to see. Works by Gainsborough, Canaletto, Rubens and Rembrandt are just some of the masterpieces being exhibited.

The changing of the guard at the castle is another attraction. This takes place every two days. They are at Victoria Barracks and their march takes them to the castle. Marches and songs accompany them.

History

The town and the structures in the area are very old. The castle itself is very ancient. Building of the complex commenced in 1075. To date, it is the biggest and most ancient castle still being occupied. For over 1,000 years, the fortress has been under nonstop occupation.

Windsor Castle in Berkshire has also been redesigned and refurnished several times. The walls of the structure are still in the same place as where William the Conqueror first set them. The Round Tower was reconstructed by Henry II around the 1170s. Expansion of the fortress took place in the 1360s under the reign of Edward III.

In 1992, a fire razed nearly one-fifth of the whole castle, but it was rebuilt within five years.

Cost

The cost of admission is 8-14.20 Pounds. Taking a stroll at the Great Windsor Park is free. Watching the changing of the guards is also free.

Not far from the castle is the Guildhall. It was constructed by Sir Christopher Wren. Other sightseeing spots are the Windsor Parish Church, Eton College and the Brocas Meadows. From here you can savor a stunning view of the castle and the river.

Windsor Castle in Berkshire is open everyday from 9:45 AM to 5:15 PM. While you are touring the place, you can also drop by many of the restaurants around the area.
