4. Memphis, Tennessee: Criminal Intent
Known for its music and its world famous barbecue, Memphis, Tennessee, may not be the best place to raise a family. Just last year, there were more than 7,000 reported aggravated assaults in Memphis. This doesn’t constitute for the ones that went unreported. This statistic put the city towards the top of the list among U.S. cities.
Not only are assaults an issue in Memphis, but so are property crimes. For instance, in 2013 the city had more arson than all but five other large U.S. cities, 366 total. Memphis also has a poverty rate of almost 30%, one of the worst rates in the country.
