Acapulco in Guerrero – Mexico

There are several tourist attractions in Acapulco, which is why it remains one of the top vacation destinations in Mexico. Aside from the beaches, there are many places you can check out.

Location

The resort town can be found on the Pacific coast of Mexico. If you are at Mexico City, you can ride one of the buses that go directly to the town. The Estrella de Oro buses have continuous trips to the resort town.

You can also fly in direct from Mexico City. It will take about 35 minutes. Once you are in the city, you can get around by taxi, renting a car or riding a bus.

What to See

The best beaches can be found at the bay area in front of the La Costera boulevard. The most popular beaches are Icacos, Tamarindos, Papagayo and Hornos. For surfers, check out the waters fronting the Fairmont Pierre Marques hotel.

One of the biggest tourist attractions in Acapulco are the La Quebrada cliff divers. Watch as divers take the plunge into the La Quebrada. There is a platform where you can watch the dives take place. Zocalo is the town square and is known for its multi-trunked trees and fountains. There are many cathedrals here.

History

There is evidence an Indian tribe lived in the area before the Aztecs came. When the Spanish landed, the area came to be known as Santa Lucia. Its position as a trading ground drew several pirates to the area.

It was in the 1920s when Europeans started noticing the beauty of the place. From that time on to the present, it has become a major tourist destination, especially among Americans.

The bus fares going to the town cost about 400 pesos. The VIP buses cost about 500 pesos. The airfare from the US to Acapulco will cost about 1000 USD. This will include the tickets and basic lodging expenses.

History buffs will enjoy the post-Hispanic fortifications in the town. Those who want to party the night away can find many clubs and discos near its beaches. Isla de la Roqueta has numerous snorkeling areas, hiking trails and also lighthouses.

Pie de la Cuesta is one of the best known tourist attractions in Acapulco. It is 6 mi northwest of Acapulco and is known for its serenity and beauty. The town also has many golf courses if you love to play the game.
