Al Masjid Al Nabawi in Medina – Saudi Arabia is one of the sacred sites in Islam. The name translates to Prophet’s Mosque. This magnificent structure is located in Medina, Saudi Arabia. There are only a couple of transportation options for any visitor who wishes to get to this site.

The first option, of course, is to travel by plane. This is the most common route taken by devotees to Islam. They usually land in Jeddah and then visitors hop on special buses located there that will take them to Medina. Take note that some of the buses you’ll find here will take you to Mecca.

What to See

One of the most notable things to see in the Prophet’s Mosque is the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad. You can easily locate where it is by simply checking out the green dome. It’s the tallest of all the domes in this structure. Another important fact one should remember is that it is the only green dome you’ll find here.

Another religiously significant section of Al Masjid Al Nabawi in Medina – Saudi Arabia is called the ar-Rawdah an-Nabawiyah. This section stretches from the tomb of Muhammad to a pulpit. All the pilgrims who come here would make it a point to offer their prayers here. This mosque that we see today is actually about 100 times bigger than the original mosque built by Mohammad himself.

History

The prophet Mohammad immigrated to Medina in 622 AD. His very house is said to have been built right next to the spot where the original mosque was located. The original Prophet’s Mosque was designed as an open-air building built with a raised platform that was designed for readings from the Qur’an.

Further enlargement of the original structure went on as new Islamic rulers arose. The major modifications to this said holy structure were made when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was established in the year 1932.
