History
The area making up Qatar has been inhabited for thousands of years. The Al Khalifa family of Bahrain controlled the site from 1850 until 1868. Their rule ended when the Qatari sheikhs asked the British to terminate their rule. The Al Khalifa family agreed in exchange for an annual tribute. The tributes ended when the Ottoman Empire conquered Qatar in 1872.
The Ottomans ruled the area on and off until the start of World War I. That was when the Ottomans and the British accepted Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al-Thani as the ruler. In 1940, high quality oil was uncovered at the eastern peninsula.
World War II prevented the exploration of the oil until 1949. The 1950s and 1960s saw oil revenue increase rapidly. This would result in higher GDP, prosperity and increased immigration.
