Location and How to Get to This Specific Site
The site is 12 km from the outskirts of central Nara. From the JR Nara station, get on the Yamatoji Line to Horyuji. You can then take a 20 minute walk or 4 minute bus ride onto the site. From the Kintetsu Nara Station, you may board bus number 60. It will bring you to the site.
What to See There
The Buddhist Monuments in the Horyu-ji area sites in the UNESCO list are the Horyu temple and the Hokki-j pagoda. There are also 21 edifices at the Horyu-ji East Temple. Also worth visiting are the monasteries, the Hokki pagoda and the 9 structures at the Wet Temple.
History
Horyuji is one of the most ancient religious temples in Japan. Studies show that the structures date from the 7th and 8th century. This makes them some of the oldest structures not just in Japan but the world. Much of the area is well preserved.
Through the years, some important changes were made. For example, it is now accessible for people on wheelchairs. It was at the 17th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in 1993 that the site was included in the list.

Admittance to the temples cost 1,000 Yen for adults. The fee is 500 Yen for elementary students. The charge will vary if you are traveling with a group. If you are on an organized trip, your tour provider will pay for the fee.

When you visit the site, it is a good idea to use the pamphlets provided. The structures clearly have the imprint of Japanese architecture and style. However it will also become evident that they have been influenced by Chinese design.
