Geirangerfjord in Møre og Romsdal – Norway

The tourist attractions in Geirangerfjord have made it one of the most frequently visited sites in Norway. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Location

The fjord is in the Møre og Romsdal county at the region of Sunnmore. This is in the Stranda municipality. It is at the end of the village of Geiranger.

What to See

This fjord is a branch of the Storfjord. Its most popular features are the three waterfalls at the waterway sides. The waterfalls are known as the Seven Sisters, the Bridal Veil and the Suitor. Those who love waterfalls will definitely enjoy the scenery.

History

The settlement of humans in the country go back 11,000 years. Some of the oldest remains have been found in the More og Romsdal county. Archaeologists believe that these came from Doggerland. This used to be a land bridge that linked the British Isles to Jutland. But this is now submerged.

From 8300 BC to 7300 BC, the Fosna-Hensbacka culture lived in different areas of Norway. Evidence consisting of 4000 BC to 1800 BC petroglyphs depict hunters and gatherers. The oldest runes that have been found date back to 200 AD.

By 900 AD, numerous small kingdoms had appeared. The period from 800–1066 is known as the Viking Age, wherein Danes, Swedes and Norwegians explored the land. The Norwegian kingdom would then emerge in the 11th century. The country would remain in union with Sweden until 1905. It remained neutral in both World Wars.
