How to Get There

Air Pacific and Air New Zealand can take you to the island straight from LAX (Los Angeles International Airport). The two airlines also fly direct to the island from South Korea’s international airport.

A flight from Brisbane, Australia to the island lasts about 3 hrs, 40 minutes. If you’re coming in from Sydney, the flight takes 4 and 1/2 hours. If you are in Melbourne, the flight lasts over 5 hours.

What to See When Exploring Fiji

The islands are perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. At Viti Levu, the ideal dive sites are at Pacific Harbour and Coral Coast. The Beqa Lagoon is the crater of a dead volcano, and is very popular among tourists. Vatulele (12 km from Viti Levu) is renowned for their red prawns.

Diving enthusiasts may also want to check out the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands. These are to Viti Levu’s northwest side. Taveuni and Vanua Levua are more ideal for land based diving.

Some of the finest destinations in these parts are the Rainbow Reef and Somosomo Straits. The Somosomo Straits is where you will find the Great White Wall dive site. The Rainbow Reef has over twenty diving sites to choose from. There are also many hiking trails. The Colo-i-Suva Forest Park is a good place for bird watching.

History

The islands are the result of warm tropical waters and volcanic mountains. When the Europeans came, many of the island’s inhabitants became Christians. Indian laborers also came to the island. Despite the passage of time, the island still has numerous beaches and rainforests.

Fiji attained its independence in 1970. A couple of military backed coups in 1987 affected the country. In 1997, a new constitution was re-enacted. In 1999, democratic elections were held.

Cost
