Island of Mykonos in Cyclades – Greece

Location

The island is part of the Cyclades group of islands. It is located in the center of the Aegean Sea. The island is to the north of Naxos and Paros, the east of Syros and south of Tinos. History

Based on archaeological evidence, the Ionians had inhabited the island during the early years of the 11th century BCE. There are also remains at Ftelia beach dating from 3000 BCE. The island also figures prominently in mythology. The island was the site of the epic clash between the Titans and Zeus.

The name of the island was in honor of Mykons, the grandson of the god Apollo. The proximity of the island to Delos made it a very important location for supplies and travel. The island started being promoted for tourism in the 1950s, boosting its economy. From fishing, tourism is now the lifeblood of the island.
