The Musee d’Orsay in Paris is one of the most famous museums in the world. It has the biggest collection of impressionist art anywhere. It is also home to various kinds of sculptures.
How to Get There
The museum’s address is Rue de Lille, 75343 Paris Cedex 07, France. The metro service is 12 Solférino. The buses to take are 24, 63, 68, 69, 73, 83, 84 and 94. You can find the museum on the Seine’s left bank. Your tour provider or any of the public transport can bring you to the site.
What to See
The museum is a repository of numerous French artworks. Many of them date from 1848 to 1915. Some of the major works on display are Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night over the Rhone, Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Bal du moulin de la Galette, and Edouard Manet’s the Luncheon on the Grass.
The Musee d’Orsay in Paris also features Gustave Courbet’s the Artist’s Studio, Paul Cezanne’s Apples and Oranges and Eugene Delacroix’s the Lion Hunt.
The museum has 3 Henri Rousseau paintings, 24 paintings of Van Gogh, 106 paintings of Odilon Redon and 86 paintings of Claude Monet. Other artists like Degas, Manet, de Chavannes are also represented.
The collection is not limited to paintings; there are also collections of photography, furniture and sculptures dating from the aforementioned period.
History
The edifice used to be railway station. The station was built solely for the Expo in 1900. By 1939, the station was no longer able to handle the bigger trains being developed. It was used as a mailing center during the Second World War. After being used as a set in some movies, the government decided to make it into a museum in 1977.
Cost
The museum ticket costs 8 Euros, while the exhibition ticket is priced at 10 Euros. There are also tickets worth 12 to 14 Euros. These will allow you to visit other museums. A week after the date on your ticket passes, you’ll still be able to use it to purchase tickets for the Gustave Moreau National Museum. The rates will be lower.
Before you visit the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, remember it opens 9:30 am up to 6:00 pm. On Thursdays, it opens 9.30 am to 9.45 pm. It is closed on December 25, May 1 and January 1.
