A tour of Micronesia Outer Islands can be the vacation of a lifetime. The unspoiled nature of the islands makes them a perfect destination for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Location
These islands are composed of the islands and low lying atolls at the south of Palau. Together these islands form a chain. They are just across Chuuk State and Yap State.
What to See
Each of these islands and atolls have their own unique characteristics. What they all share in common is their well preserved state. Unlike other islands, these have not been affected by development and industrialization.
There are many beaches and dive sites you can enjoy. The Micronesia Outer Islands are also great places to go diving. A dive into the waters will reveal colorful fish and corals.
History
Research shows that the only empire to have existed in Micronesia came from Yap. It was early in its history when it came under European colonization. Spain took over the Caroline Islands, the Northern Marianas and Guam. These islands were administered by Spain from the Philippines. They controlled the islands from the 17th century until 1898.
European expansion grew in the 20th century. The US would assume control of Guam after defeating Spain in the Spanish-American War of 1898. The United States also colonized Wake Island.
Germany obtained Nauru. The country also purchased the Northern Mariana Islands, Caroline and Marshall islands from Spain. The Gilbert Islands went to Great Britain. Five years after World War I ended, the islands belonging to Germany were taken and turned into League of Nations Mandates.
Nauru turned into an Australian mandate. The other territories were given to Japan. After World War II, the islands under Japanese control were turned into a United Nations Trusteeship controlled by the US. Majority of the islands in Micronesia today are independent states. Guam is still under US control though.
Cost
Some of the hotels in the islands cost 120 USD a night. But there are also cheaper ones available. Tour prices vary depending on the itinerary.
