Brief History
Porto de Galinhas in Pernambuco – Brazil was once a major exporter of Brazilian wood and sugar. When slave trade was abolished some time in the year 1850, slaves who were smuggled from the African continent were transported to this town.
They were hidden under wooden boxes containing guinea fowl. This then became the inspiration for the name of the town; with Porto de Galinhas meaning “chicken port.”
