The Greek Gate in Malta is one of the most beautiful historical architectural landmarks in the country. Although it was built centuries ago, the structure has been well preserved.

What to See
This gate is the second gate of Malta apart from the Main Gate. The design of the gate, particularly the columns and the roof, are akin to those in classical Greece.
Apart from the gate, there is also a Valletta-Mdina railroad station nearby. Tourists can check this out when they visit the gate. The area also has a small restaurant where you can eat some local delicious food.
Although the Greek Gate in Malta is well preserved, it was built in the 17th century. Some are of the opinion that a Greek community existed there. The site is actually called St Nicholas Square. Saint Nocholas is the patron saint of Greece. There also used to be a chapel in the area. This was dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
History
It was around 5200 BC when people started settling in Malta. These settlers were Neolithic who came via Sicily. Majority of the people made their living via hunting and farming. Archaeological evidence shows majority of them lived in caves.
One of the most fascinating periods of the history of Malta was around 3600 BC, the so-called temple period. The Ggantia Prehistoric Temple in Gozo is considered the oldest freestanding edifice on the planet. However, there are several of these temples that were built.
This temple building period continued until 2500 BC. Suddenly, the
civilization that constructed these temples disappeared. Why they vanished is unknown. This period was followed by Bronze Age. There are several artifacts from this era that have been excavated. Remains of these villages have been found.

According to historical records, this gate was used to usher in the slaves, as they were not allowed to use the main gate. There is evidence the gate was renovated at some time in the past by Grand Master de Vilhena.
